"Woke up last night to the sound of rain on my tent. Had to get up to close the fly. Started hiking a bit after 6 and luckily the rain stopped, at least temporarily, just as I got moving. The first task of the day was to climb up and around Mt. Thielsen. There was quite a bit of snow and progress came much slower than expected. After descending down into a valley, I began another climb to the highest point along the PCT outside of California. There was even more snow on this ascent and I made it to my lunch stop almost 2 hours behind schedule. Unfortunately, after I stopped at my planned lunch destination, it only took a few seconds before I was covered head to toe in mosquitoes. I walked about half a mile further to a spot in the sun that still had bug issues, but they were much less severe. I ate a not lunch and continued on my way.
Not long afterwards, the rain resumed. It was actually alright, as it helped reduce the number of bugs. I kept on hiking and eventually made it to camp. Hundreds of mosquitoes are salivating outside my tent while they watch me write this. Little do they know, there are dozens of mosquito carcasses littering the floor of my tent that have accumulated over the last few days. It is raining again as well.
Tomorrow I am taking an alternate route to avoid another high elevation area with lots of snow. I'm resupplying in Crescent Lake. I'm planning to make it to a ski hut tomorrow night to camp. Hopefully it is both rain and bug proof." 7/4/22 7:36 PM
