PCT Day 20 (6/5/22) Five Lakes Creek to Benson Hut

"Gnarliest day of mandatory exposure to the elements of my life. Sleeping at Benson Hut tonight. Sitting next to a fire as I write this." 6/5/22 1:29 PM

Neither Finn or I expected any weather anywhere close to this at all. We spent most of the day in freezing rain. On top of the ridges we experienced extremely high winds. To top it off, there were some steep, slippery, snowy areas where a fall would've been potentially very dangerous. Luckily, we were on route to Benson Hut, a hut that I had visited previously. When we arrived at the hut the door was locked but there was a broken window. The Sierra Club locks the hut during the summer (which should not be done, in case of emergency), but a previous group of hikers had found themselves out in similar conditions to ours and decided to smash the window. We graciously embraced this decision, got a fire going, and enjoyed the basic comfort of a shelter that is so easy to take for granted.
